Black sage bowl – Pine pitch exterior

Black sage bowl – Pine pitch exterior

One of my favorite bowl, the color created by the pine pitch outside the bowl is spectacular. I use it to dry herbs or store grains and seeds.  I let them dry like this for a month or two before moving them to a jar. The exterior is made “waterproof” using pinyon pine pitch “glaze”. I forage the pine sap on the property where my pottery studio is located. Sticky job but the result is quite awesome.

The bowl can only be used for dry goods as the interior is not glazed.  Cordage made with milkweed fibers from Colorado.

The bowl was created with a mix of local wild clay (Valyermo – Southern California) and clay from Duluth Minnesota. The collected clay is reduced into powder using my stone grinder (Molcajete) then water is added to reach the right consistency and make the clay workable.

Mixed techniques – Hand build and wheel.

Fired at cone 03 (2014 °F – 1100 °C) using my electric kiln and pit fired.
