Papaver Bowl
I’m working on a book about edible wild seeds and grains and, last year, I collected a bunch of Papaver somniferum, also called Opium poppy which has edible seeds. I stored the pods full of seeds in this bowl for a few months.
The surface features a textured finish with mustard and white tones created by natural clay and ash glaze, giving it a weathered, earthy appearance. The uneven rim adds a unique character, reflecting nature’s imperfect beauty.
Its compact size and sturdy form make it versatile for everyday use, whether for serving small portions, holding snacks, or as a decorative piece. The bowl’s rustic charm and natural materials create a timeless design that brings a connection to the earth and traditional craftsmanship into any space.
Created using a mix of local clay and clay mined in Southern California.
Glaze made from pine and oak ashes and white “chalk” foraged in the Mojave desert near Valyermo, California. Waterproof and tested for leaks.
Technique – Stone shaping. I use stones and pressure to create the bowl. It’s a technique that details which can’t be replicated by other methods.
Fired at cone 6 (2200 °F – 1204 °C) using my electric kiln.
