Pine Needles Tea - Teapot

Pine Needles Tea - Teapot

This teapot was hand build with clay collected in the local hills (Valyermo – Southern California). The handle is made of a recycled (dead) pinyon pine branch. The wood was treated with beeswax and attached to the pot using wildcrafted pinyon pine pitch glue (Mix of pine sap, charcoal and beeswax).

It will hold 2 cups of liquid (500 ml). The top of the pot is made of a stone and dried lichen (. The stone was picked up in a local river wash specifically for that teapot and the lichen (probably Usnea)  came from the Colorado mountains. The lichen/stone are used to keep the heat inside, you can change it later on with other plants such as mugwort leaves and so on. Do not make tea with the lichen.

This rustic teapot can be used but I think it’s mostly a beautiful decorative piece. It comes with two small cups made of the same clay which were fired in an electric kiln but also pit fired afterwards. Don’t place the teapot over flames or stove, place the herbs  or pine needles inside and pour boiling water. You'll need a strainer when serving it.

Beautiful texture created by stones present in the unprocessed clay. The collected clay is reduced into powder using my stone grinder (Molcajete) then water is added to reach the right consistency and make the clay workable.

Hand build. Glazed inside and partly glazed outside.

Fired twice at cone 03 (2014 °F – 1100 °C) using my electric kiln and pit fired with the cups.

Transparent and white glaze made with natural ingredients (Non-toxic).
