Pine Pitch Elderberry Wine Bottle
Beautiful bottle made with a mix of unprocessed local wild clay (Valyermo – Southern California) and clay from Duluth Minnesota. The collected clay is reduced into powder using my stone grinder (Molcajete) then water is added to reach the right consistency and make the clay workable.
Hand build. Glazed (white) inside.
The outside of the bottle was sealed using pine pitch “glaze”, basically pine sap applied to the bottle when it is removed from the pit fire and still red hot. This method gives beautiful brown and black accents to the surface.
Small repair using pine pitch glue due to a small piece of limestone exploring during the firing which removed some of the clay but didn’t compromise the inside. Happens from time to time with wild clays.
Fired 3 times at cone 03 (2014 °F – 1100 °C) using my electric kiln then final pit fire.
