Pine Pitch Mug
Wild clay mug, transparent glaze inside and pine pitch “glaze” on the exterior. Truly one of a kind. The pine pitch was added when the mug was removed from a pit fire and red hot. The black coloring occurs when the pine pitch catches fire due to the high temperature. I cover the outside with 3 layers of pine pitch which is absorbed by the clay. One of my favorite mug.
Made with a mix of unprocessed local wild clay (Valyermo – Southern California) and clay from Duluth Minnesota. The collected clay is reduced into powder using my stone grinder (Molcajete) then water is added to reach the right consistency and make the clay workable.
Made on the wheel.
Fired twice at cone 03 (2014 °F – 1100 °C) using my electric kiln then pit fired and pine pitch added.
