Stone Bowl
Recently I’ve created a few dishes and bowls using large rounded stone, a bit similar to the pestle of a stone mortar. Using this method, you can create subtle details in forms and textures which are impossible to reproduce using your hands or wheel.
The bowl design may look somewhat odd when empty but whatever you put in it will look amazing. I’ve been using this bowl for my new book about edible grains and seeds.
Created using a mix of local clay and clay mined in Southern California.
Glaze made from pine and oak ashes and white “chalk” foraged in the Mojave desert. The brownish color is created from Iron oxide (food safe) extracted from rusty materials found in the mountains.
Fired at cone 6 (2200 °F – 1204 °C) using my electric kiln.
Approximate dimensions:
Diameter: 4 inches – 10 cm
Height: 1.5 inches – 4 cm
Weight: 8.75 oz (248 gr)
