“Acorn Coffee” Cup and Saucer Set - 018
Yes, you can make coffee with roasted acorns but, of course, it works beautifully for everyday coffee or tea too, but these sets feel closer to small ritual objects than tableware. The cup sits in the saucer like a found stone in a shallow hollow, heavy, grounded, and slightly irregular. The surface carries the memory of the land it comes from — rough in places, soft in others, with a skin that feels weathered rather than finished.
These are some of my favorite pieces to make. I love how raw they look, how unpolished and almost geological they feel in the hand. The texture shifts between coarse desert grit and smooth, melted ash glaze, as if the piece has been pulled straight from the ground and lightly sealed by fire. I even did a photoshoot in the desert a couple of months ago and they blended in so well with the landscape that I managed to lose one set among the rocks and dust.
Made with a mix of clay and desert soil.
The glaze is made from pine and oak ashes and white “chalk” foraged in the Mojave Desert near Valyermo, California. The surface breaks and pools naturally, creating subtle variations from piece to piece. Waterproof and tested for leaks.
Hand built -using stone tools. Fired at cone 6 (2200 °F / 1204 °C) in my electric kiln.
