Acorn Coffee Mug
This mug was shaped from clay gathered in the Valyermo desert. Over the past months I discovered several new clay deposits scattered across the landscape. After many tests in the studio, this piece is one of the first vessels born from that newly found wild clay.
Unlike commercial clay, this earth does not cooperate easily. It resists the hands, cracks, and demands patience. Because of that struggle, the finished mug feels even more meaningful to me.
The clay is used almost as it comes from the land. Small stones and mineral fragments remain inside, creating the natural texture visible on the surface. The raw clay is first dried, then ground into powder using a stone grinder (a molcajete). Water is slowly added until the earth becomes workable again.
The mug was formed using mixed techniques — partly hand built, partly thrown on the wheel.
Glazed inside and partially glazed outside.
Fired twice in an electric kiln to Cone 2
(2124°F / 1162°C).
The transparent and white glazes are made with natural ingredients, including ashes collected after the Bridge Fire (2024).
