High Desert Bowl

SKU: SKU024
$60.00Price

This small bowl is made from wild, unprocessed clays collected in the local hills around Valyermo, California. The clays are used in raw state, with natural sand, minerals, and small inclusions left intact, giving the surface a tactile, uneven texture and subtle variations in color. Each piece carries the marks of the land it comes from. This was originally a test piece, you’ll see the inscription (60/30) at the bottom which was the ratio of 2 wild clays used. It came out so nice, I decided to offer it for sale.

The bowl is handbuilt using the pinched method, resulting in an organic, slightly irregular form that sits comfortably in the hand. The rim is left softly uneven, and the surface shows the traces of hand shaping and firing, making each bowl one of a kind rather than a standardized object.

The piece is first fired in an electric kiln, then pit fired, which deepens the earthy tones and creates natural darkening and smoky variation on the surface. A thin transparent glaze is applied to the interior, making the bowl waterproof while allowing the raw character of the clay and iron-rich coloration to remain visible. The exterior is left largely unglazed, emphasizing the mineral texture and natural color of the clay body.

This bowl works well for small servings: drinks, snacks, condiments, tasting portions, or a modest portion of morning cereal. It can also be used as a small presentation vessel for ferments, nuts, olives, or sauces. Beyond function, it’s meant to feel like a quiet, grounded object—simple, tactile, and rooted in place.
