Small fermentation vessel 09142026

This small vessel was handbuilt from wild clay gathered near Valyermo, Southern California. It was shaped entirely by hand with simple stone tools, leaving visible traces of the making process and preserving the irregular, tactile character of the clay – a true representation of the land.
 
The vessel was pit-fired with pine wood and other gathered organic materials. The smoke and fire created its earthy surface and subtle variations in color. It was then waterproofed with beeswax, an ancestral technique that gives the vessel a soft, natural finish while allowing it to remain functional.

This was a personal working vessel rather than a purely decorative object. I have used it for the oxidation and fermentation of wild tea leaves, and for sprouting grains—processes that require time, attention, moisture, and transformation. Its compact form makes it useful for small experimental batches while also serving as a quiet reminder of the relationship between wild materials, food, and the vessels that hold them.
 
Each vessel is unique, shaped by the character of the local clay, the movement of the hands, and the unpredictable effects of the pit fire.
